Business person Kenan Yavuz, founder of the Bayburt Kenan Yavuz Ethnography Museum, who received the “2021 Silletto Award” given by the European Museum Forum (EMF) within the Council of Europe, says, “May my loyalty reward to the land where I was born.”

When the European Museum of the Year Awards, the longest running and most respected museum awards given by the European Museum Forum (EMF) within the Council of Europe, could not be held due to the pandemic last year, the museums deemed worthy of the award for 2020 and 2021 were announced online on YouTube . The Troy Museum designed by Yalın Architecture and the Odunpazarı Modern Museum, signed by Kengo Kuma and Associates (KKAA), received special awards at the “European Museum of the Year Awards”, one of the most prestigious museum awards given by the European Museum Forum (EMF). Bayburt Kenan Yavuz Ethnography Museum also received the “2021 Silletto Award” in the same competition. This week, we focused on the story of the museum in Bayburt, which won the 2021 Silletto Award.
As is known, this is not the first award to Bayburt. The artist Hüsamettin Koçan was the first to receive the award with the Baksı Museum, which he opened in his village, where he was born and raised, in Bayburt in recent years. Now, Bayburt has made a name in the international arena for the second time in the field of museology. Businessperson Kenan Yavuz established a culture house in the village of Beşpınar, where he was born and raised, on a total of 15 thousand square meters, of which 4 thousand 500 square meters of indoor and 10 thousand 500 square meters of open space. Serving as a cultural house for about 6 years, the venue has completed its development to a great extent and gained the status of “Official Private Museum” in 2019. Despite the new type of coronavirus epidemic, the museum was visited by 12 thousand people during the summer period.

The museum, which is one of the most important cultural and tourism points of the city, received the “2021 Silletto Award” within the scope of “European Museum of the Year Awards”. Kenan Yavuz, the founder of the museum, says that he started building the museum in 2013 as part of his social responsibility project to pay the loyalty debt to the land where he was born and raised. Stating that the museum was registered as a private museum by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2019, Yavuz said, “We are honored that Kenan Yavuz Ethnography Museum has one of the most important, most respected and prestigious awards in the world. “The international recognition of the museum we built in our village and crowning it with an award has led us to great happiness on behalf of my country, Bayburt, and Anatolian lands.” Yavuz pointed out that the European Museum Forum gave awards in 6 main categories in the museum of the year award process in Europe and says:
“The carrier of cultural heritage, which is one of these main categories, has been registered as an exemplary project for revealing successful examples of cultural projects, contributing to the socio-economic and socio-cultural life of the region and promoting the region’s culture to the world by advancing the prosperity of the region. And our museum was crowned with the first prize in this category. ”
Highlights the award-winning region
Kenan Yavuz states that in the award justification of the museum, the architectural texture, smell, folklore and integration with the local people, the cultural roots of the region and the exemplary projects that bring those cultural roots to the present and the future stand out.
Emphasizing that the crowning of the museum with an international award made a significant contribution to the city’s becoming a cultural destination, Yavuz said: “One of the most important factors in winning this award is the support of the people of Bayburt, my village and the Bayburt bureaucracy, especially our Governor Cüneyt Epcim, and the extraordinary interest we receive from the press. carried to the point. Our advisory board, members of the board of directors, everyone is an extraordinary volunteer mobilization, a journey that we started with an amateur spirit turned into a professional structure. Bayburt is the homeland of Dede Korkut, Poet Zihni, Father Ağlar, one of the ancient lands of Turkey. It is really a great responsibility to have the mission of bringing the ancient culture here to the agenda of our country and the world. ”
